What to check in any poster app

Open the same picture in each app and try these. They’re what decides whether a poster comes out right.

1. Exact size. Can you type a finished width in cm or inches, not only a percentage or a number of pages?
2. No stretching. Does the other side follow the picture’s shape, so nothing distorts?
3. Overlap. Can you set how much each sheet repeats its neighbour? Butted edges show gaps.
4. Marks and labels. Cut marks, alignment marks and sheet labels save time when assembling.
5. A preview of every sheet. Can you see each page before printing, not only the whole poster?
6. Quality warning. Does it tell you when the picture will print blurry at that size?
7. PDF pages. Can it open a PDF and choose the page? Are lines still sharp when printed big?
8. Margins. Can you set margins to suit your printer, so nothing is cut off at 100%?
9. Reprinting. Can you reprint one bad sheet without printing the whole poster again?
10. Privacy. Does it work offline, without uploading your picture?

Acrobat Reader, the free option

Acrobat Reader’s print dialog has a Poster mode under Page Sizing & Handling, with tile scale, overlap, cut marks and labels. It handles PDFs only, so save a picture as a PDF first. It sizes the poster by percentage, so work out the percentage from the size you want. The main guide has the steps.
